Biography
RYE — Barbara P. Trefethen, 88, of 480 Wallis Road, diedThursday, July 31, 2003, at the Edgewood Centre in Portsmouth.
She was predeceased by her husband of 54 years, Horace H. Trefethen, who died in 1990.
She was born in Everett, Mass., Feb. 1. 1915, the daughter of the late Edwin H. and Myrtle (Gowen) Peek. She grew up the Boston area, graduating from Newton High School.
Mrs. Trefethen received her registered nursing degree from Massachusetts Memorial Hospital in Boston in 1935. She was formerly employed as a surgical nurse for Tri County Orthopedic Hospital in Kittery, Maine, and had also been a private dutynurse.
She was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Church (South Church) in Portsmouth, Rye Players, Every Other Tuesday Club during World War II, and Friends of Odiorne Point. She organized the first GirlScout troop of Rye.
Mrs. Trefethen enjoyed traveling extensively with husband. Together they visited many foreign countries and all 50 states.
Survivors include three daughters, Gail Dyer and her husband Rodney of Gilford, Sharon Fahey and her husband George of West Newbury, Mass., and Carol Fisher of Rye; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will take pace Monday from 9-10 a.m. at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. A funeral service will follow at 10 a.m. in the funeral home.
