THEIR LIVES IN THE BALANCE.

Trefethen and Smith on Trial for the Murder of Deltena Davis.

CAMBRIDGE, MASS., April 25. – The Trial of Trefethen and Smith for the murder of Deltena Davis of Everett began in the Middlesex county superior criminal court this morning. Chief Justice Albert Mason and Justices Caleb Blodgett and John W. Hammond are on the bench.  The government’s case is represented by Attorney General Pillsbury and District Attorney Cooney, Counsel for the defense are ex-Governor John D. Long and ex-Mayor Marcellas Coggan of Malden.

A closely contested trial is expected, as it is stated, on good authority, that the government has a very strong case, and will present some entirely new and startling evidence. On the other hand, this is said to be ex-Governor Long’s first murder case, and it is not probable that his effort in this direction will be disappointing.

The court room was crowded when the trial opened this morning.
