PORTSMOUTH - Helen M. Trefethen, 91, formerly of 245 Middle St., and Rye, died Thursday, Oct. 16, at the Rockingham County Nursing Home.
She was born in East Boston, Mass, the daughter of Charles and Mary (O’Donnell) Strong, and attended Rye and Portsmouth schools.
Mrs. Trefethen and her husband, Frank H. Trefethen, owned and operated Trefethen Store in Rye for many years. She later worked during the summer at Samoset Resort in Rockland, Maine, and Bald Peak Colony Club in Melvin Village, as a desk clerk well into her 80s.
She had resided in Rye from 1925 to 1956 and was a resident of the Margeson Apartments, 245 Middle St., for 20 years. Before moving to Brentwood, she had lived in Crossville, Tenn., and Sarasota, Fla.
She was a communicant of Immaculate Conception Church of Portsmouth. Se was an avid bingo player and enjoyed handcrafts.
She was predeceased by her husband, Frank H. Trefethen, who died in 1964; two sons, Larry Trefethen and Frank “Smiley” Trefethen; and three grandsons, Sean Trefethen, Frank Trefethen III and Brant Dame.
Survivors include three sons, David M. Trefethen and James Trefethen, both of Eliot, Maine, and Glenn Trefethen of Orange Lake, Fla.; two daughters, Anne Pinch of Crossville, Tenn., and Patricia Young of Punta Gorda, Fla.; 18 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
TREFETHEN - Helen M. Trefethen, 91, formerly of Portsmouth and Rye, died Oct. 16, 2003, in Brentwood. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 21, at the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York, Maine. Interment will be in Central Cemetery, Rye. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Rockingham County Nursing Home, North Road, Brentwood, NH 03833, or to the charity of one’s choice.
