“If you look closely [at the photos], you can tell that my family was high end, pretty well off. My grandmother married UP. The Trefethen family was fru-fru a bit. But then Harry, my grandfather, was injured in the early 30's and couldn't work, so they lost their social and economic status when my dad was very young. My grandmother, Ivah, went to work to support the family - which caused stress in their relationship and family, but she did it. Sole breadwinner, a woman, in the 1930's. My dad and his brother had to go along the railroad tracks to collect coal that had fallen off of trains to heat their home.
I think my dad's [Duane Trefethen] progressive ideas, his support of women's capabilities and liberation from oppression, stemmed at least in part if not in whole, from watching his mother support his family financially.”
